The Rhine Valley
The Rhine Valley, especially the region between Koblenz and Rüdesheim, is rated as one of the most beautiful scenic areas in Europe. Impressive scenery can be found all over the world, but what is special about the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is the melodramatic panorama which has provided a the background for stories of human passion and destiny.
Where the forests of the Vulkaneifel and Siebengebirge, Westerwald, Hünsrück, Taunus and Rheingau accompany the flow of the river and its tributaries, lined by steep vineyards and knights' castles growing into the rocks, can be found a resounding echo for strong emotions. Emotions reflected in the music of Richard Wagner, the literature of Clemens v. Brentanos, Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe and Heinrich Heine, the paintings of William Turner and in historical monuments, castles and palaces.
At the beginning of 19th century poets and artists “discovered“ the wild and romantic Rhine Valley and were soon under its spell – landscape which unlike any other region is additionally blessed with legends and stories. The feelings which were awakened gave their creative spirit wings and inspired them to create works in which they could set down these intense feelings. This is why the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is seen to be where the German romantic movement originated.
This Romance of the Rhine started a wave of travelling which continues to this day, and which you can become part of.
